The idea that Her Majesty is down to her last million quid makes for good headlines but the truth is far less dramatic.
The gradual draw-down of that reserve was always the express intention of the Royal Household and the Treasury. The reserve had been carefully squirrelled away by the Household to deal with a period of royal austerity.
The monarchy has already gone through some extreme economies over the past five years, and bumped up its revenue massively, too.
In 2012-13, the Household extended Buckingham Palace summer opening to 78 days, receiving 514,000 visitors. In 2008, it opened for 63 days and received 392,000 visitors. In 1993, in 56 days of opening, it received 379,000 visitors.
