When they married, William and Kate asked for donations to charity in lieu of gifts, but they did accept presents from the Royal Household.
As a royal warrant holder, Turnbull & Asser is considered part of the Household, Mr Hanson said.
He declined to reveal the cost but it is believed that, as a bespoke commission, they were at the top end of his range – where gowns are made from hand-embroidered cashmere and cost up to £8,000 each.
The material is sent to India to be embroidered, being flown to Delhi and then driven and bicycled more than 500 miles to Srinagar, an area populated with talented family embroiderers.
The fabric is then returned to Mr Hanson’s modest Edwardian studio in Nottingham to be painstakingly turned into a robe.
A single dressing gown takes around six to eight hours to make and costs on average £2,300, while a bespoke commission takes twice as long and costs around £3,000 – and often significantly more.
