The Duchess of Cambridge smiling at the crowd as she prepares to officially name the ship RRS Sir David Attenborough after the government vetoed the name Boaty
The Duchess of Cambridge has officially named the polar research ship which the public voted to call Boaty McBoatface.
Kate, who is the ship's official sponsor, released a bottle of Champagne which smashed on the ship's hull in Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead docks, Merseyside this afternoon.
The ship will actually go by the name of RRS Sir David Attenborough after the government vetoed the name Boaty - which will instead be used as the name of a small submarine kept on board.
Sir David also attended the ceremony, and was pictured laughing and joking with Kate and her husband Prince William as they toured the ship and met its crew.
Releasing the bottle of Champagne, the Duchess of Cambridge said: 'It gives me great pleasure to name this ship Sir David Attenborough and may God bless her and all those who sail in her.' Kate wore a cornflower blue utility coat by Alexander McQueen that she has previously sported on three separate occasions.Read more from The Daily Mail.
