For the royals who have to spend most of their lives “on show” without complaining about it, the need for a bolthole where they can switch off is especially strong.
It’s understandable that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just said goodbye to their hideaway home with a heavy heart. For three years the four-bedroom farmhouse on the island off the northwestern tip of Wales has been their refuge from the demands of public duty and the relentless scrutiny that goes with it.
Now that William’s posting has ended and he has announced he is to concentrate on charity and conservation work, the house is once again going on the market. It is easy to see why the royal couple will miss it.
Downstairs there is a spacious living room, a dining room with French doors, kitchen, utility room and cloakroom. The windows look out on to a private beach where William and Kate liked to go walking with Lupo their cocker spaniel.
They also enjoyed a drink at The White Eagle pub and Kate did her own shopping at the local Waitrose.
