THE Queen is planning to split her time between Buckingham Palace and her private retreat on Royal Deeside in the event of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death.
Palace sources say Her Majesty will follow Queen Victoria’s mourning for Prince Albert by making Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire her second home.
The Queen, who will be 90 next year, is understood to have told aides she wants to spend more time at the 55,000 acre estate if the duke, now 94, predeceases her.
The royal couple are in residence at Balmoral for their annual holiday and, despite a number of recent scares, Prince Philip’s health is said to be “robust”.
A source said: “There is a feeling that if the Duke of Edinburgh passed away her preference would be to spend more time in Scotland.
The discussion has been if he goes before her that would be her wish.
