In a conversation, with the royal commentator Alastair Bruce, Her Majesty reveals the crown was shortened by an inch for her coronation and was much larger when worn by her father George VI’s coronation in 1937.
Her Majesty reveals she is unable to look down to read speeches at the State Opening of Parliament.
The Queen said: “You can’t look down to read the speech, you have to take the speech up. “Because if you did, your neck would break and it would fall off.
“There are some disadvantages to crowns but otherwise they are quite important things.”
The Imperial State Crown measures 31.5cm (12.4 in) and weighs 2.2lbs (1kg).
It is much lighter than the 4.9lbs gold St Edward’s Crown - which is used for the moment of crowning - and is decorated with 444 precious and semi-precious stones, with Baroque arches.
The crown features a gem known as the Black Prince’s Ruby which is believed to have been worn by Henry V in his helmet at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Click link for blog for full post from EXPRESS.
